Global Running Day Is Next Month, and You Can Get Involved in the Celebration

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The beginning of June marks the start of summer vacations, watch and shorts tan lines, and our favorite “holiday” of the year, Global Running Day.

On Wednesday, June 2, 2021, folks around the world are celebrating the sport by attending group runs, participating in races, tackling Strava challenges, or simply getting out there and logging miles on their own.

No matter where you are in your early-summer training, make sure to use this day to lace up and give back to the sport we are all crazy enough to love, and the community that fosters it. Here, we’ve found a few events, challenges, and special offers happening around the nation to help you celebrate Global Running Day.

New York Road Runners

Few organizations are as running-obsessed as New York Road Runners, which puts on the New York City Marathon and Brooklyn Half Marathon — the largest full and half marathons in the world, respectively—among dozens of other races throughout the year. They also go all out for Global Running Day. For 2021, they’re hosting a free virtual 1-mile event from June 1 to June 6. If you want to participate, you can sign up on NYRR’s website and join people all over the world celebrating the holiday by running or walking a mile. The organization asks participating runners to share their runs and photos on social media using the hashtags #NYRRVolvoVirtualRacing and #GlobalRunningDay.

We miss the World Marathon Majors, too. But we’re excited to see them return this fall, and we’re excited to see how many miles the AbbottWMM Global Run Club can accumulate in 24 hours. From midnight to 11:59 p.m. GMT (8 p.m. ET to 7:59 p.m. ET) on June 2, signed-up runners can log any mileage in that time period.

To participate, you must sign into your Global Run Account and GPS track the run. You can only submit one activity in the 24 hours. For more details, see here.

Global River Run

Running is an individual act, but it can also be used for good. Take Australian ultrarunner and environmental activist Mina Guli. For Global Running Day, she is organized the Global River Run, which will operate from June 2 (Global Running Day) through June 5 (World Environment Day).

The event is partnered with the World Wildlife Fund and Aqua For All. Runners can sign up for free and receive a virtual race bib. When signing up, you will pledge a distance and also pick a river around the world that you want to run for. The hope is to spread awareness about importance of keeping our waterways clean. You can find out more information about this event here.

The Global Running Day 5K

Want to join American marathon legend Meb Keflezighi for a virtual 5K? You can with the The Global Running Day 5K hosted by UCan and Charge Running. The event is free to sign up for with any working email. The event will operate a bit differently than others. Starting at 7 p.m. EST and going until 8 p.m. EST on June 2, runners can track a live leaderboard, enjoy chatrooms, and listen to live audio commentary from Keflezighi and Ali on the Run Show podcast host Ali Feller. Olympic Trials qualifiers are also slated to participate, so if you’ve ever wanted to test your skills against some of the best runners in the country, now is your chance.
